Make it Real

Consider AUTHENTIC projects for Cooperative Learning: Students can produce for the real world or act in the real world.

Keep in mind:  Cooperative projects can include work that students do totally on their own--the cooperative aspect of their project might be in terms of giving each other support or feedback on their progress. Their evaluation then becomes a question of: How did the others do at supporting you or giving you constructive feedback on your work. Or, how did you do at supporting the others in your work and giving them constructive feedback.

Lesson Ideas

  • Have students create lessons on course content to teach others the same content

  • Have students edit or improve work that already exists online
    • In a world language class, have students offer to translate content of non-profit organizations into their language
    • In a business class, have students approach a non-profit and offer to do some work for them related to your course content
    • Find and edit wikipedia entries for course related content

  • Have students "pay it forward" by making materials to help future students in the same class learn the content, or current students in the class learn aspects of the content (e.g. jigsaw the course materials in preparation for the end of semester final)

  • Students can act locally on a topic, and then assemble their work into a collective portfolio of work on a topic or just give each other feedback and support on their individual projects. For instance:
    • In an environmental class they can design a study and carry it out in their own communities, then plot results on a Google Map
    • In a building related field they could construct models of something and video tape or photo their steps along the way
    • In a nursing class they can do an internship and share with other students their key learning for success in the field
    • In a history class they can research a local historical place, interview a local historian and produce materials for others on this content
    • In a political science class students might participate in an election, serve as an election judge and create an advertisement to represent their key learning

Cooperative Online Learning Requirements

  • A clear articulation of how their work will be evaluated
  • A timeline that has built in "check points" along the way so they can track their progress
  • A working relationship with the other members of their group
  • A motivating purpose, essential question, Big Idea...something worth working hard to accomplish which may mean something that serves a broader purpose than a grade in a class
  • A means for holding each other accountable for their contributions
  • Working knowledge of the tools they will be able to use to create their final project
